The Lynyrd Skynyrd Crash Site Monument came to life due to the many dedicated friends and fans of the band. We had an idea for a highway marker near the crash site on Hwy 568. It would give fans something to see, touch, remember, and have a picture of when visiting the crash site.
We wanted the marker to be an official Blues Trail Marker authorized by the Mississippi Development Authority and included in their promotions. After six months, we learned the Marker was not going to be approved by our deadline. With donations above projections from fans far and near, the monument on private property was our solution.
Dwain and Lola Easley generously provided land on Easley Road, just south of the original Hwy 568 marker location. Board member Pat Nelson along with Dave Pace of McComb Monument presented the drawings that became the fourteen foot wide and 8 foot tall black granite monument with Lynyrd Skynyrd pictures and information displayed on both sides of the band and plane crash.
A marker will still be placed at the hospital prior to Oct. 20, 2019. The Lynyrd Skynyrd Monument Project Board will continue the application process with the Blues Trail Marker and feel that one day they will also be displayed alongside the monument on Easley Road near the crash site and at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.
